Your dividend and income
All amounts in $. Take the figures from your dividend statement where you can. Yellow boxes are waiting for an entry.
What the dividend is worth after tax
You include the cash dividend plus the franking credit in your income, pay tax on the total, and the credit counts as tax already paid.
From cash dividend to after-tax value ($)
What could change your result
Your tax with and without the dividend
The difference between the two is the tax on the dividend. Take away the franking credit to see whether you pay more or get a refund.
After-tax value of this dividend at other incomes ($)
Same dividend and franking, at different amounts of other taxable income.
About this calculator
Purpose. To estimate, for an Australian resident individual who holds shares directly, the grossed-up value of a franked dividend and whether it leads to extra tax to pay or a refund of excess franking credits at their marginal rate.
Assumptions and why we chose them. You can change every assumption above.
- Resident tax rates, the low income tax offset and the 2% Medicare levy (single thresholds) for the year you choose, as published by the ATO. Rates as at . The 2026-27 Medicare low income thresholds were not yet published, so the 2025-26 thresholds are used.
- The example is a fully franked 1,000 dividend from a company franking at 30%, with 75,000 of other income. It is one of the worked examples we test the page against.
- Where you leave the franking credit empty, it is estimated as the franked part of the dividend times the company rate divided by one less that rate. The statement figure is always better.
- Shares held for 45 days at risk by default, because most long-term holders meet the rule.
Limitations and their effect.
- It does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP repayments, family Medicare thresholds or the senior and pensioner offset. These can change the tax on the dividend, and the senior and pensioner offset in particular can increase a refund.
- It does not cover dividends received through a trust, partnership, company or super fund, or by non-residents. Those follow different rules.
- It does not apply the related payments or dividend washing rules, which can deny credits even under the 5,000 small shareholder exemption.
- It does not cover off-market buy-backs or Division 7A deemed dividends.
- It works out the tax on the dividend at your other income for the whole year. Other deductions or offsets you have would change the marginal rate used.
