From your income to what is left after tax

Business income without GST, less expenses and the super deduction, gives your taxable income. Tax, the Medicare levy and any study loan repayment come off that.

How your tax is worked out

Tax offsets reduce income tax only. They cannot reduce the Medicare levy or a study loan repayment, and they are not refunded.

About this calculator

Purpose. To estimate the tax an Australian resident sole trader pays on a year's business profit and other income, the effect of claiming a personal super contribution, and how much to put aside for tax each week.

Assumptions and why we chose them. You can change every assumption above. Rates are as at , for the financial year.

  • Resident income tax rates, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy, surcharge tiers and study loan repayment rates for the year you choose, as published by the ATO.
  • The 2026-27 Medicare levy low-income thresholds had not been published at the rates date, so the 2025-26 thresholds are used. This only affects taxable incomes under about 35,000 dollars.
  • The small business income tax offset is 16% of the tax on your business share of taxable income, up to 1,000 dollars. Your business share is your business profit over your taxable income, and the super deduction is not treated as a business expense.
  • If you are registered for GST, all your income is treated as taxable sales and all your expenses as carrying GST you can claim back. That is the usual position for a service business.
  • A personal super contribution counts as a reportable super contribution, so it is added back when working out your study loan repayment and the surcharge.
  • The example figures (180,000 of income, 32,000 of expenses, a 10,000 super contribution) are a typical established professional sole trader.
  • The weekly set-aside is your total tax for the year divided by the weeks you enter, with GST shown separately.

Limitations and their effect.

  • It does not cover non-residents, part-year residents, working holiday makers, seniors and pensioners tax offset or private health insurance rebate reconciliation. Any of these can change your tax.
  • It does not apply the personal services income rules or the non-commercial loss rules. If either applies, deductions or losses can be denied and your tax would be higher.
  • It does not include capital gains, foreign income, trust or partnership distributions, or franking credits.
  • The Medicare levy uses single thresholds. If you have a spouse or children and a low income, a family reduction could lower your levy.
  • The concessional cap and Division 293 checks only count the contribution you enter, not employer super paid on any wages, so the real position could be over the cap sooner.
  • It does not prepare or lodge a return or a BAS.
