Things to know

What could change your figures

Tax

How the tax is worked out

Resident rates for 2026-27. The Medicare levy is on taxable income. HELP is worked out on repayment income, which adds back salary sacrificed super.

Payslip

What your payslip might show

Employers use the ATO withholding tables, which round each pay and only roughly allow for offsets. The difference is settled when you lodge your tax return.

Salary sacrifice

With and without your salary sacrifice

Salary sacrifice moves pay into super before tax. Your fund taxes it at 15%.

About this calculator

Purpose. To estimate the take-home pay of an Australian resident employee for 2026-27, per week, fortnight, month and year, with super and HELP shown separately and the $1,000 standard work deduction included.

Assumptions and why we chose them. You can change every assumption above that is not a legislated rate.

  • 2026-27 resident tax rates, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy and the 2026-27 HELP repayment rates, as published by the ATO. Rates as at . The 2026-27 Medicare levy low-income thresholds had not been published at that date, so the 2025-26 thresholds are used. They only matter on taxable income under about $35,000.
  • Employer super of 12%, the legal minimum from 1 July 2025, worked out on your salary before any salary sacrifice, as the law requires. It stops at the maximum contribution base of of salary.
  • You work for one employer all year, are a resident for the whole year and have given your employer a tax file number and claimed the tax-free threshold.
  • Take-home pay is your cash pay less the tax for the year. Deductions lower the tax, so they raise take-home pay by the tax saved, not by the amount you spent.
  • The $1,000 standard work deduction applies automatically from 2026-27. It is the lower of $1,000 and your salary and wages, including any bonus and after salary sacrifice, reduced dollar for dollar by the work-related expenses you claim. So your total work claim is the higher of your actual expenses and that amount. Other deductions, such as union fees, gifts and tax agent fees, are claimed on top and do not reduce it.
  • A bonus is taxed as ordinary income for the year.

Limitations and their effect.

  • The Medicare levy surcharge is not included in the figures. If you earn over the threshold and do not hold private hospital cover, your tax would be higher. We show the amount in "Things to know".
  • Division 293 tax, the private health insurance rebate, the seniors and pensioners tax offset, family Medicare thresholds and fringe benefits are not modelled. Each of these could change your tax.
  • The payslip table is an estimate from the ATO formulas. It does not cover bonuses, which are withheld differently, a second job, withholding variations, or a year with 27 fortnightly or 53 weekly pays, which can leave you with a tax bill.
  • Not for non-residents, working holiday makers, contractors or part-year residents, who are taxed differently.
  • Results are rounded to the dollar, so a total can differ from its parts by $1.
